REWORK - Wild Horse

I originally thought this was one of my favorite of 52 when I first wrote it and posted it. I was a little over halfway done with the project and I was really pleased with the tracks I was putting out. When I listen back on it, I still like it, but I felt like I could rework it in a different way.

When I posted the original track I WROTE that it was bass, drums, and electronics... which was accurate, so I thought why not kill the electronics and do all guitars instead. So I did (I actually left some of the keys in the chorus). I added three guitar tracks and a baritone. I tracked live drums instead of the old dr-5 drum loop. I changed out some of the vocal effects. Hmmm what else... oh, I trimmed the final chorus.

I don't know. I kinda dig it. It's not perfect, but who is.

ROYAL HEADACHE

Alright, enough of all this old crap being reworked (at least for now), it's time for some new stuff. We've been sitting on this new single for a minute but it's time for the world (our small fanbase) to enjoy it.

Royal Headache is a fuzzing droney banger that doesn't overstay its welcome. Was kind of channeling The Ramones and Fu Manchu a bit, I hope you enjoy it.

Hopefully, we'll have a video out for it shortly. Until then, it's up on all streaming services.

REWORK - Another Kid

Thought I'd try my hand at a more recent track (and by recent I mean 2012 haha). I originally dropped this and other track called '12 Down at Batman' together in this post titled TWO NEW CUTS OF LOVE. I had not been writing music a lot during that time for RHOTS cause I was busy in NYC doing another band, and my creative juices were a little stagnant. I actually remember debating whether or not I was even going to put those tracks out.

I think the original is actually quite nice. It's mixed low and the drum machine isn't my favorite. I felt like it was missing some elements as well. So I added live drums, and I brought everything up overall. The guitars are the original takes but run through new amp settings. I added in some keys that I think sound spacey. With vocals, I didn't mess around too much, they were ok I thought. 

Do I like the new track any more or less? I don't know, I think they're both fine, I'm just trying to kill some time in this this life and make some art. Dig it.

REWORK - Ride the Bomb

I hate this song. It's probably one of my least favorite tunes I ever recorded. The vocals are out of key and shrill, the drum machine is too much, and the length is unnecessary, overall I just thought it was a big mess....so why not mess with it?

I started with tracking live drums. I wanted something super simple, ala Beatles-esqe, which I ultimately was trying to channel when I wrote this. It also helps that I suck at drums, so I wasn't trying to overdo it. I redid most of the guitars (I left in the solo cause I actually didn't hate it). The original acoustics were blown out and really trebly, I redid those. The vocals I tuned a little in places and redid the overall mix and sound of them. I cut the second and third choruses down to the same length as the first chorus, feels a little tighter now. I didn't mess with the keys and bass, I actually really liked those.

I mean, I'm still not a fan of this tune, but I think It turned out way better than the original.

REWORK - Jon Boy

Ok, I'm going WAY back to 2009. It's crazy to think I originally wrote this song 13 years ago. I was living in the East Village of Manhattan and recording on Garageband in my one bedroom apartment (I'm sure my neighbors hated me).

Jon Boy was part of an EP I released called A Lonely Mouth, which died with Myspace, until I recently re-uploaded it. It's a song about youth, and feeling free yet terrified of things around you.


As for the rework. I added live drums and some new spacey guitars. I tuned up a few ruff vocal takes and just brought the volume up overall.

REWORK - Long Way Down

So I mentioned in the Youtube post the other day I was planning on cooking up something on this site. I think it's just gonna be exclusively through here (and Bandcamp, cause that's where I'm hosting the tracks), but I'm going to start going through some old tracks and reworking them a little. Maybe a little remaster, a little tune-up, a little new instrument here and there. Something that just tinkers with the old shit and tries to give them some new life.


I have a lot of source material with "52", "A Lonely Mouth" (the mini album that come before "52") and even some of the other tracks I released afterward, but I thought I'd start with Long Way Down. It was the first tune I wrote for my weekly journey of 52, and I felt like that'd be a cool place to start.


I scrapped the drum machine and tracked live drums (I'm no Neal Peart, but it'll do). I tuned some of the bad vocal takes. I switched out some guitar tones and just brought everything up overall. Hope you dig it.
